As per PMBOK, the individual or group within or external to the performing organization that provides the financial resources, in cash, or in kind, for the project is said to be sponsor.

Who is a Stake Holder?

A Stakeholder is a person or group or organisation/society/body which may be internal and/or external to the performing organisation and has either negative or positive influence on the project’s outcome (product or service or result).

Society or General Public could be a stakeholder
In some projects “customer” is used to describe the purchasing entity, whereas “users” describes people who will benefit from the project’s outcome.

Eg., Cycle is the high level requirement, which can include wheels, handle, frame and other spare parts, these are concentrated in detail in later stages.

Triple Constraints

Triple constraints: Scope, Cost and Time

Extended: Risk, Quality and Customer Satisfaction

Note: As per PMI now there are six constraints now.

Assume, if the client adds in more scope, the time line and cost are affected. If client wants to reduce the time, you need to cut down the scope or increase resources which may impact cost. If the client wants to cut cost, you need to cut down the scope.

define the requirements in an unambiguous way with clear and achievable objectives

What is a Program?

A program is a group of relelated projects managed in a coordinated way and is on-going. They may include elements of related work outside the scope of the project.

Example: ’Windows’ is a program. Each release of Windows is a project.

What is an Operation?

An operation has similar characteristics to a project: it is performed by people; constrained by limited resources; planned, executed, and controlled. The major difference is that an operation is on-going and repetitive.

It does not have a definite start & end dates and keeps the organization functional and sustain business.

PMBOK defines a project as “temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service or result”.

Temporary: Every project should have a definite start and end dates. A project may last few month(s) or few year(s).

Unique: The product or service is different in some distinguishing way from all other products or services.

Eg., Any product produced by executing a project example new model bmw car, a software package, a new building, an annual maintenance of any service(AMC), a thesis(from a research) etc.,
